Winson 2004: The First Six Months

About Winson 20XX:
Winson 20XX is an idea of mine where I would send to those who might care a CD every year. The CD would contain a series of songs that would best represent me for that year. It’s a time capsule, for reminding myself who I was and what I had done for that year. In return, I also semi-expect those who I send the CD to return a CD of theirs.. say Amanda 2004 or Ka Man 2004. I’ve been doing this since 2002, and is the most effective way to see how much I’ve changed from one CD to another.

About Winson 2004 – The First Six Months:
Winson 2004 – The First Six Months, was sent out in May 2004, and was the most experimental compilation CD of all. My friends didn’t like it, but they’re not really supposed to.

  1. short program : 04
    SEGA, スペースチャンネル5 original soundtrack
What is this? All will be revealed in this album!

  2. This Woman’s Work
    Maxwell, Now
Ultimate. Crying. Song.  Can you believe this is a cover song?

  3. 沒有愛 (Without Love)
    張國榮 (Leslie Cheung), 鍾情 (Passion)
This remarkable song was featured in one of my favourite Chinese movie ever. Nothing short of legendary when it comes to his work, even if it’s already been a year [since his death].

  4. Big Time Sensuality (The Fluke Minimix)
    Björk, Björk: Greatest Hits
One of my favorite songs in her Greatest Hits album, as I always find myself bobbing my head and totally grooving to the beat through the entire song.

  5. Down With Love
Michael Bublé & Holly Palmer, Down With Love
Ever since I bought my first Frank Sinatra CD, I’ve been waiting for something like this coming my way. Can you feel the charm between the two?

  6. 清水 (Clear Water)
彭羚 (Cass Phang), 清水 (Clear Water)
Her best CD is also the worst selling album in her entire career.  This song illustrates the style of that entire CD. The song is so refreshing from the typical cookie-cutting cantopop industry.

  7. You Rock My World
    Michael Jackson, Number Ones
Everybody brushed it off when it first hit the radio, but has anyone really listened to it?  I don’t think he has lost his touch. Not musically at least.

  8. Go or Go Ahead
    Rufus Wainwright, Want One
One of the few artists that I’m still absolutely in love with.  His music makes you feel the way he intends you to, and all you can do is to enjoy the ride through his fluid voice.

  9. Lovin’ You
    平井堅 (Hirai Ken), Ken’s Bar
When I first listened to this song, all I could think about was when he would hit the hi-E.  He never made it to the hi-E, but the song is still a remarkable cover.  One of the better covers I’ve heard in a long while.

  10. Birthday Cake
    Cibo Matto, Viva! La Woman
This group really pulled me away from anything I’ve ever listened to before.  Highly original, their albums are so expressive that the lyrics and music constantly mesh into one luscious experience.

  11. The Girl from Ipanema
Astrud Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto’s Finest Hour
How can anyone not fall in love with her voice?  This is her first song that got her instant fame, and I can see why. Throughout her career, she has always incorporated an unique style to her music.

  12. In The Musicals
    Björk, Selmasongs
The first time I watched this movie, it immediately went to the top of my favourite movies list.  The movie made me feel so loved as a son, especially since I had long forgotten what it felt like until I watched this movie.  I was also very surprised of how different her style is in this movie from her music.

  13. Run
    AIR, Talkie Walkie
Electronic does not mean it has to be bad techno.  I was introduced to them when their new album came out, and have been googling them ever since to note their every move.

  14. Shh
    Frou Frou, Details
She’s like Dido, but with actual talent.  I found out about her through the movie Garden State, and her album turns out to be a great collaboration between electronic, jazz, and pop.

  15. What You Own
    Original Broadway Cast, Rent
What can I say?  I’m a RENT-whore.. and this song clearly illustrates why I love it so much.  The song has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it back in 1999, and I’m still every bit as in love with it as I was back then.  Take a listen, and maybe you’ll be as nuts about it as me :-) .

  16. 無所不在 (Everywhere)
梁詠琪 (Gigi Leung), 我想 · 我唱 (I Think · I Sing)
This song brings a lot of memories to where I was in 2003.  A poppy song can only go so far, but with a backing of real emotions, the song can be turn to a powerful reminder.  Love u mom.

  17. Babara Allen
Jean Ritchie, World of Music (Disc 1)
First heard of this song in my Fine Arts: Musical Arts class, and loved all 76 seconds of it. It’s the lyrics, it’s the melody, it’s her voice, and it’s everything it needs to be.

  18. I Got Rhythm
Jodi Benson & Company, Crazy For You
One of the most energetic pieces in Crazy for You, which I saw at this extremely-privileged high-school play with my friend Ted.  The dance sequence gets more intense as time goes on, but the energy never dies down.

  19. spaceport : introducing ulala!!!
    SEGA, スペースチャンネル5 OST
This song is from a game I’m recently hooked on.  It doesn’t matter that I don’t nearly have enough rhythm to play past the first stage.  The entire presentation was a good sum-up of where my mind has been for the past six months.
